Default Autozone Couldn't Read Service Engine Codes?

My son went to Autozone the other day to have them read his trouble codes because his service engine light came on. It may have been a service emissions light that came on - I forgot exactly what he told me. Anyway, Autozone could not read them because they said it was locked. What's up with that? Is the dealer the only one's that can do this? Does Chevy do this so that you have to take it to a dealer to get serviced? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ive had service codes read by a few different shops before so its not just dealers...at the same time, i think those shops pay chevy some money in order to do it. argon and a few others will def. know the answer though

I recently had 2 different auto zones tell me they could no longer read codes as shops complained to the BAR that this was mechanics work only and autozone gave in. Northern California but I would guess it will soon apply to the whole state. Bunch of bs.

O'Reilly's machine could read the codes, but did not show any transmission codes.
Their machine did read the codes on my Toyota van.

Had GM dealership techread the codes, cost was $35, indicated that the transmission was slipping. Had to replace the torque converter.
