Do I need a transmission cooler?

Do I need a transmission cooler?
My truck is a 1998 k1500 automatic, just the regular 4x4 not the z71. Does this truck already have a transmission cooler on it? If it does would I hurt anything by putting an auxillary cooler on? I am going to be hauling about 6,000 pounds no more than 100 miles at a time.

i would think that if it came with the factory towing package it would have one. if no package then probably not. i would say you would need one just to be on the safe side. as they say, the number one killer of transmissions is heat.

All vehicles with automatic transmissions have coolers built in or around the radiator. Look to see what your truck is rated at for towing and if you are close to the limit get an additional one. If you tow like every-other-day, get one.

RE: Do I need a transmission cooler?
I just picked up the biggest one I could find for about $65, but it doesn't have any instructions. How tough is it to install the tranny cooler. WIll I have to take the grill of my truck or can I reach it if I take off the turn signal?

Mount it whereever you want. I suggest overtop of the original trans cooler or somewhere in front of the radiator at least. Then unhook the incoming line from the transmission (the top one, not the bottom) and run it to the new cooler. Now run a new line back to the inlet on the original cooler. Now add more transmission fluid as you have more "area" to fill with fluid.
