Loud whining from front end
1993 Chev ext cab 4x4. 160k odo.
I was cruising down the road about 30 mph (steady roll) when all of a sudden the front end started to whine. It progressed with speed and slowing down. Just like the cards we would clip to our bicycles when we were kids. I have a feeling it could be something serious but, not sure what as of yet.
CV? U-joint? Internal gears?
Since we just had a pretty good snow storm, I figured it was a chunk of ice or a stick getting lodged somewhere. I found nothing!
Has anyone experienced something like this? Thanks in advance!

Yes, and the engine sounds normal when in park. I haven't had the time to dig around closely yet.

Update.
I finally had the time to check this out a bit. Started it up this morning and heard not whining. Put it in reverse and backed up about 20 ft. Fwd the same. Shifted to 4 high did the same. 4 low the same then back to 2high. Drove it for 1/2 a mile with no whine present at all. I did find that one of the CV shafts had more end play than the other. Not sure if that a problem. Is there anyway to test the accuator? I think for now I will change the fluid and hope for the best.
Anymore input from y'all would be great. Thx
