Default Working On the Front Brakes - 2003 Silverado 1500

Worked on the front brakes. The truck (2003 regular cab 1500 2x2) is still on original pads at 39600 miles. Since I've already had to replace the rear calipers, rotors, and pads, I expected the fronts to be ready for replacement. Pulled the wheels and found the outer pads still with 3/8" left and the inners with 5/16". Took everything apart. Found the pads were not free on the slides, but the wear was even and the rotors were good. Cleaned everything up, filed the slots on the pad backing plates, lubed the slides, and swapped the pad sets left & right to switch the inners with the outers, put things back together.

I wanted to get the old fluid out of the calipers, so bled the RF followed by the LF. No good. Air in the lines. Bled all four, RR, LR, RF, LF. Still no good. Still on jack stands, put back wheels on and ran it up to 50 mph and jammed on the brakes a few times. ABS activated OK. Bled all four again and this time got rock solid pedal with engine off. With engine on, lousy pedal. Very low and tended to go lower while holding it down. Put the wheels back on and took it to a gravel road where I engaged the ABS ten or fifteen times. Pedal improved some. Did not want to take all the wheels off to bleed again (driveway repair), so left it as-is. The next day I took it on a 100 mile trip and the pedal is now great! I do not know why. Maybe the pads had to do some wearing in since I moved them around.

Anyway, that's my story. Maybe it will help someone out?

Gerald
