Default Problems with front differential

Hey guys,

I'm new to this place, and I was just wondering if any of you guys that know a lot about trucks could help me out.

I've had my '79 F-150 for a while now, but it has some problems with it. It's sort of become my hobby truck, and i would like to do all the work on it myself.

The main problem I have is a knocking in the front dif when it's in 4-wheel drive, and gear fluid leaks out both ends of the axles by the tires. I think the knocking is a broken gear tooth, so I will look into that soon, and replacing the ring and pinion if I need to. However, I have no idea about the fluid leaks. How do you go about fixing that, and what kind of money/time is usually required?

Also, the truck has been parked for a little while, and I always leave it in first gear when it sets. However, the truck over the period of a week will roll forward a bit, even in first. Does this mean that the clutch is going out?

if it is leaking out of the end of the axels then it is most likley that you need to axle shaft seals. May be best to take it some where and have them do it.

If your trucks front hubs are unlocked, its wheels will spin freely because they are not being turned by the axles. If the transfer case is set to 2 wheel mode, it will not send power to the front differential.
