Default 1999 Ram 2500 5.9L - overheated, won't start

Good day fellow forum members;

The other day I sold my 1999 Ram, 2500 5.9L truck. It had set up, in disuse, for about 2 years but cranked and seemed fine. Family deal; inlaw and teenager leaves in the truck to drive about 50 miles home. Next day they communicate that it started over heating shortly after they left my place. they kept stopping and letting it cool and adding water. But it died for good and they paid a wrecker to complete the trip to their home. Now I have to go there and try to get it running. I had them remove the negative battery cable and then put it back on to see if perhaps the ASD (Automatic Shut Down Relay) - or the computer part of that circuit might reset. It didn't.

I expect it was overheating because the thermostat had rusted closed. But no-run has me a bit baffled. The truck has an ASD, so I suspect it's something to do with that. Their is the computer (Power Train Control Module, PCM) and the ASD relay. But isn't there a sensor to signal the PCM? Getting hot multiple times, it seems to me more likely the sensor but I am assuming the ASD is triggered by an overheating event. I'm pretty lost on this one.

All insight valued greatly kind folks.
