Default newbie - collecting thoughts

Hi all -

Ran across the forum while trying to research a truck purchase. Figured it couldn't hurt to stop by and ask some questions.

I'm in the market for a used 4x4 pickup - extended or crew cab. Right now I'm considering an '03 Ford x-cab with a 4.6, and several Chevy K2500's - all with 6.0's. Would love to go with diesel, but they seem cost prohibitive in our area.

Was wondering if anyone could give me some thoughts on these. What kind of engine life are people getting out of the Ford 4.6's or Chevy 6.0's? Also - what kind of mileage?

I don't necessarily need a 3/4 ton, but my kids are into horses, so I may be needing to tow a trailer at some time. Does anyone tow that kind of weight (5-6k lbs) with a 4.6 1/2 ton?

Does anyone have any thoughts to put me in the right direction? I know everyone has their own preference, but real facts & figures would really help a lot.

Thanks!
Steve

I would definitely say either the 6.0 liter or if you can find (and afford the gas) the 8.1. I currently drive a 6.0 and love it. I tow a motorcycle trailer about every other week and it does the job just fine. I have towed a 16 foot enclosed trailer which was full of lawn equipment and it pulled it comfortably enough. I have 175,000 on this truck and it still runs great! If I ever replace it it will be with an 8.1 truck. They too have the Allison trans (like the diesels) which is a huge plus! All in all for occasional towing the 6.0 is a great combo of power and decent mileage.

I agree with Mrshamrock, Go with a 6liter. They are dependable, powerful, efficient, and not a ford
