Well I am not going to buy a different truck, just want to make this one fast. The SS will not work as I need the 4wd. SO looks like either the 502 or stroked 383 for simplicity. I have heard of the 383 stroker easily pushing 500 hp and still with decent milage. This truck also has to be driveable for daily driving and towing, but just barely. I will give a little to get alot.

i always thought those largely built stroker 383s that had that infamous lope to them at idle would be cool to run into on a truck on the street. no body thinks big around here tho.

I always think big. If you saw my business you would understand. I think a stroker is the way to go, and could you imagine a crew cab stroker? that would be bad ***!!

What about getting aGM performance 5.3 and using your factory PCM and wiring, then strap a Turbo to it or Supercharger? Remember when I was looking at that $1,500 (used) supercharger setup? They guy had an 2000 Silverado 5.3, ext cab, 4X4, with 38" tires on it. He said it would smoke HEMI's with it with a 3.73 gear ratio, but still get the exact same gas mileage on the highway as it did BEFORE the supercharger AND the 38" tires! Ok so take it a step further, start with a performance block, get the STS turbo kit (will put out more than the supercharger), crank up the boost as high as you want, then get a custom tune to tie it all together! I bet you could get 500 rear wheel hp without a problem. Might want to build the transmission up too, lol. That will leave you with enough "potential" to straap performance parts to it and bump it up whenever you get bored! lol. And you can also open the exhaust up without worring about torque loss. Thats what I would do. That way it will still drive like your truck does now, just with more power.
