Default Hub noise

My friend asked me to pack the front bearing on their 1993 ford ranger 4x4.
when I removed the auto locking hubs, I laid them out and reassembled the exactly as they came apart. Not very complex at all. Now there is a clicking sound coming from both sides. And clue whats up with that. Did I miss an important step that wasn't obvious. The assembly was layed out perfectly and went together in the same sequence. The 4 wheel drive engages and disengages normally. Is it normal when you put the hub cover back on over the hub, the last 1/2 inch is spring loaded? Or is there suppose to be no resistance at all when installing the cover over the hub.
Before i packed the bearings there was not any clicking sounds coming from the hubs. Perhaps I didnt torque the bearings right?. Should be like any other bearing job right?
